Day Trips - Sète
Guide to the town of Sete, South France
Sete is a little town in the South of France that is located near the River Herault. Sete is situated in the Languedoc-Roussillon region and is a popular resort town with a fairly important international port that is also the biggest fishing port in the Mediterranean. Sete is commonly called the Venice of Languedoc and the locals in Sete speak both French and Occitan.
Although the outskirts of the town boast a few modern factories, the town has still managed to maintain its old world charm. The town of Agde is in close proximity to both the Canal a Rhone and
the Canal du Midi, which led to the development of the town in the 17th century and contributed much to Sete’s rich history.
Visitors to Agde will find plenty to do and see here. In the summer, the weather is ideal for visitors, when the town of Agde hosts a water jousting event that takes place every year. Sete also has a number of cafes, restaurants, bars and quaint hotels that tourists can take advantage of while in the region. The town even has a number of interesting museums that are well worth a visit.
Getting to Sete is relatively easy, with a number of trains coming into the town from Montpellier. It is also possible to enter Sete by one of the two canals; there is also a ferry that frequently transports passengers to Sete from Morocco.
